Worcester, MA natives, Golden Girls, have been tearin’ up the local music scene with their grungy, yet wild jams. A quartet led simultaneously by Ben and Andy, Golden Girls offers something lacking from most local acts, evident during their live sets. They’re kind of a love-it-or-hate-it type of band, but it doesn’t take much to notice where I stand on the issue.
Each track on their forthcoming, U L T I M A T E F R E E D O M 7” includes raspy, scruffy sounding vocals by Ben, which are supplemented by Andy’s ridiculous falsetto. The pairing, along with their refreshing rendition of a grunge rock sound really results in something great, to say the least.
If outrageous guitar solos are more of your thing, they’ve got you covered as well. Pretty much all of the songs on the record include untamed, super impressive shred sessions by the talented front man duo. This is another reason why this band really rules, live. Golden Girls really do know how to entertain. I can tell you, you’ll probably admit it’s some of the best few bucks you’ve spent on a live show for a local act. But don’t take my word for it…
Tracks to check out are definitely “Newports” and “Dreams”, which are on the May 15th release of their U L T I M A T E F R E E D O M 7” (you can find that at Burning Mill Records). Also, some of older work on their MySpace–which are still some of my favorite of their tracks–“Amateur Teen Sex Attics” and “Total Bummer”. If you’d prefer a digital version, their CD is currently available as well for a mere $4 on the Burning Mill Records site. Be sure to check out their MySpace for upcoming tour dates in the MA/NY area. (A Canadian tour along with fellow wormhole native band, DOM, is also in the works, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.)
